The Paper Architect
The Paper Architect is a dazzling story of creativity, imagination and love, bringing together several disciplines in an inventive and spellbinding theatre experience. Secluded in his workshop, a lonely paper architect spends one last night with his elaborate paper constructions, playing out wistful fantasies. When he places a cut-out dancing woman onto an intricate paper set, she comes alive. He adds a paper man and watches their romance unfold. Birds fly overhead, leaves flutter from a tree and firecrackers flicker across the night sky as we share the model-maker’s hopes and desires, and feel his joys and sorrows.
The Paper Architect envelops its audience in a miniature world of breathtaking delicacy, where gossamer-light details tell a bittersweet story of love lost and dreams unrealised.
The Paper Architect was created with the proceeds from the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Award, it won the Helpmann Award for Best Visual Theatre Production and was listed by The Observer as one of the 10 best theatre shows of 2013. It has been shown at the Barbican in London, Perth International Arts Festival in Australia and will tour Taiwan in 2016.
